Who are the primary stakeholders on this issue, and what are their positions?
Trade Union Representatives
Trade union representatives are directly involved in the well being of Coca-Cola workers. Their role is to protect the workers from human abuse and exploitation. However, their involvement is threatened, undermined, and neutralized. Union representatives risk their lives going to work. Anti-union activities essentially deny their right to strive for better working conditions. The Sinaltrainal vs. Coca-Cola case is a prime example this. In this example, Panamco, a Columbian Coca-Cola bottling company killed several Sinaltrainal workers.
Consumers
Consumers are essentially the end users of the product, and play an indirect role in the continuation of Coca-Cola’s production practices. Money spent on purchasing Coca-Cola products is instrumental to the growth of Coca-Cola’s operations. However, consumers are primarily interested in the end product, and are generally not aware of Coca-Cola’s production practices. An informed public of Coca-Cola’s harmful activities to the environment may be a factor in influencing them to be less indifferent on the company’s practices, as opposed to passively accepting their practices.
Coca-Cola Management
Their role in this issue is to look out for the best interest of the Coca-cola brand and its image and operations. Their specific stake in this conflict (environmental and human rights misconduct) is that they have direct control over first line workers and the treatment they receive, and they help moderate and control resources being inputted and outputted from Coca-cola plants. Therefore, they regulate how waste is disposed of, where it is disposed and the volumes. They have much influence over the well-being of our planet and its health.
Coca-Cola Investors
Their role in this issue is to look out for the best interest of the Coca-cola brand and its image, operations and budgets. The stake they have in this conflict is having control over what is being inputted and outputted from the Coca-cola plants, where their operations take place, salaries and wages and political relations. Holding a significant amount of shares in Coca-cola, allows an individual to partake in much of the managerial decisions made on behalf of the Coca-cola brand. Most importantly, these investors are held liable for all of the actions and results made by Coca-cola representatives. Aside from invigilating, they are “ringleaders” to the decisions made to exploit and abuse workers human rights and take advantage of poorly established environmental laws in certain regions.
Municipal/Federal Government
Their role in this issue is to look out for the best interest of the general public; whether it being a local state/region or entire nation. Their stake in this issue lays within protecting the people, environment and continuously updating laws regarding corporate operations and human rights bills. The municipal and national governments act as moderators in any conflict that arises out of Coca-cola’s doing, and depending on the type of government that is active at the present time different strategies and tactics are used depending on whether they are a democratic, dual, dictatorship, socialist etc. type of government. The local and federal government watch closely on micro and macro levels of authority, and are always ready to take action by a means of lawsuits etc. to correct unlawful or immoral behaviour. Depending on the country where a Coca-cola conflict may be taking place, different measures are taken; these measures will be discussed in this campaign as each issue is addressed.
Human Rights Activists and Organizations
Their role in this issue is to look out for the worker's within the Coca-Cola Company, as well as the general public. Human rights activists' only real stake in these situations is caring for and fighting for the greater good of the common day person. Groups such as the United Nations Global Compact have helped with this issue as they got Coke to sign to continue with certain principles, two of which in regards to human rights, to support and respect protection of internationally proclaimed human rights and to make sure business is not complicit in human rights abuses. (1) These organizations would be against the way in which Coca-Cola is treating not only it's workers, but the right for the general public to be informed about the issues surrounding the Coca-Cola Company's practice.
Environmentalists Their role in this issue is to look out for the best interest of the environment, domestically and internationally, whatever the conflict may be taking place. These people have a huge stake in this issue because Coca-Cola factories cause substantial damage to the environment. A key issue regarding this is water depletion in the areas in which factories are present. Environmentalists would be aware of the effects these issues have on the environment and would want Coca-Cola to change their practices to be more environmentally friendly.
